Congress Overrides Obama Veto of Terror Victims' Bill

Statement

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) voted to override President Obama's veto of S. 2040, the Justice Against State Sponsors of Terrorism Act. The measure allows the families of victims of terrorist attacks to take legal action in the United States against nations which provided support to the perpetrators of attacks. The 348-77 House vote rejecting Obama's veto followed a vote of 97-1 in the Senate and is the first instance in which Congress has acted to override the veto of a bill by President Obama.

"Congress acted with a unified voice to support families impacted by terrorism and reject President Obama's veto," said LaMalfa. "Despite the President's backroom lobbying to block a measure that grants more rights to the families of terror victims, compassion and common sense prevailed."
